Comparing Historic Parks with Contemporary Parks

Compare and contrast one of Copenhagen's contemporary public parks with one of its historic ones.

Copenhagen is known to be one of Europe’s greenest cities due to its number of parks and overall lifestyle of its citizens. Copenhagen is home to a number of various historic parks that have been around for decades as well as many newer, modern parks that display themselves in a different and unique way. Whether it be a modern park or a historical park, native Danes and visitors of Copenhagen can all enjoy these parks to their highest fulfillment. Even though all of the parks offer a place of refuge for anyone looking for it and a few other similarities, there is a clear distinction between a historic park, like Kastellet, and a modern park, such as Mimersparken.
Mimersparken

Regardless of the type of park, both historic and modern parks allow visitors a place to escape from the city life, if even just for a few minutes. Both types of parks set a certain amount of space aside for the creation of an area for its citizens to enjoy in a number of ways. Parks allow for meeting places between friends and coworkers, a social and interactive place for children to play and somewhere for people to go to escape the stress of everyday life and recover their mindsets.
Kastellet
Despite their similarities, these two parks are very different from each other in many ways. Kastellet is an older park filled with history. Because it used to be a military fortress, Kastellet contains a fortress surrounded by large grassy hills for defense. Currently, Kastellet still has a small military presence however it is open to the public as a public greenspace and park. The park offers large open spaces for its visitors to come and relax while also learning about the history of the Danish military. Mimersparken differs from this heavily due to its lack of a historic presence.

Mimersparken was opened in 2012 and offers a place mainly for teens and youth to play and hangout. Mimersparken has large areas for different sports to be played and a variety of play ground-type structures to be enjoyed by the public. The styles of the two differ drastically. Kastellet, a historic park, has an older classic feel, with bright colors and wide-open spaces, over cobblestone and dirt pathways, while Mimersparken takes on a modern style with graffiti painting, and modern structures with a variety colors, over a concrete roadway. Kastellet caters towards a quiet, historic atmosphere where visitors can appreciate the past, while Mimersparken is geared toward a younger crowd where they can express themselves more freely.

Even though these two parks have many differences, they both contribute to the overall atmosphere of Copenhagen. One of the most interesting things about Copenhagen is its diversity of parks, which is shown by Kastellet and Mimersparken. Historic parks and contemporary parks both work together to influence the culture of Copenhagen and that is one of the many reasons that make Copenhagen great.
